Geelong City Market plants itself right in the heart of Little Malop Street every Saturday, transforming the Market Square Mall precinct into a bustling hub of food, drink, local makers, and live culture. Conceived as a City of Greater Geelong initiative and operated by Barwon Events - co-founded by celebrity chef Simon Toohey and events specialist Kieran Blood - the market draws inspiration from Hobart's iconic Salamanca Market, blending the energy of a premium produce market with the creativity of an inner-city weekend festival. At its core are local growers supplying fresh fruit, vegetables, lamb, beef, eggs and dairy, alongside a co-op of named regional farms including Bellagreen Organics, Tyalla Farm, and Yarra Valley Berries. Surrounding them is a carefully curated roster of artisan drink producers (breweries, distilleries, coffee roasters, cellar door experiences), prepared-food vendors, bakers, and makers of handcrafted goods and wearable art. Weekly cooking masterclasses hosted by Toohey take place at the Nisbets Kitchen station from 11am, while the Forte Buskers Stage draws live performers from opening. The market's stated ambition is to be Geelong's cultural anchor - a place where the Barwon region's growers, creators and hospitality community find a shared platform and a genuinely enthusiastic crowd.
