A bag of tomatoes, a secondhand book and something for lunch. Community markets bring different kinds of stalls together, so you don't have to know exactly what you're looking for.

Community stall with produce, bread, books and plants

A bit of everything, close to home

Some community markets are mostly handmade goods and produce. Others have plant sellers, household clear-outs, food stalls and a few surprises between them. The name describes the gathering more than a particular shopping list.

That mix is part of the appeal. You can pick up a few useful things, stop for breakfast and discover a local business you hadn't come across before. Smaller markets can be worth knowing about, especially when they become part of your regular weekend.

Make a morning of it

You don't need a full itinerary, but a couple of details can make the visit easier.

Can I bring the dog?

An outdoor market isn't automatically dog-friendly. Venue rules vary, particularly on school grounds, around food areas or where other animals are present.

Is it easy to get around?

A market on grass feels different from one on sealed paths. If you're bringing a pram, using a mobility aid or avoiding uneven ground, look for access and parking information.

Who's here regularly?

Found a good bread stall or someone selling healthy seedlings? Ask when they'll be back. The market might run every week while an individual stall attends less often.

Found something you'll want again?

Take the seller's details before you leave. Food gets eaten, plants grow, and that person who repairs jewellery can be surprisingly hard to find again when you need them.

If you're interested in having a stall yourself, ask the organiser about casual spaces and the kind of products they accept. A broad mix of stalls doesn't necessarily mean every application is suitable.

Know what you're after?

Try farmers markets for producer-focused shopping, craft and artisan markets for handmade work, or markets this weekend to start with a date.
