Leave yourself time to look

These markets reward a slower lap. The thing you want might be sitting under a table, tucked into a box or mixed in with a collection you weren't expecting.

Unlike a specialist vintage event, the stalls can cover almost anything: kitchenware, garden equipment, toys, spare parts, clothing and furniture. Swap meets may have a particular focus, such as motoring or collectibles. Despite the name, don't assume every event involves swapping rather than buying.

Before you call it a bargain

A little wear can be part of an object's appeal. Missing pieces are another matter.

Can I have a closer look?

Check underneath, open the drawers and look for cracks, repairs or missing parts. Ask before unpacking or handling something delicate.

Does it work?

For electrical goods, tools and mechanical items, ask what has actually been tested. "It worked last time" leaves you with a different decision from a demonstration.

How am I getting this home?

Before buying something bulky, ask about collection arrangements and whether the seller can hold it. Take measurements if it needs to fit through a doorway, or into the car.

Early lap or late browse?

Arriving early gives you more to choose from. Visiting later may mean a quieter browse, but the piece you wanted could already be gone. Neither guarantees a better price.

Bring a way to carry your finds, and don't assume every occasional seller accepts cards. If you want to negotiate, make a friendly offer and be comfortable with the answer.
