About this market

The Original Open Market is one of South Australia's most enduring community institutions - an old-fashioned, open-air flea market that has been running on The Reserve at Christies Beach since 1982. What began with just seven stalls founded by a group of unemployed women making toys and handcraft at the local Baptist Church has grown into a much-loved gathering of up to 100 stalls operating under strict Council guidelines.

As a non-profit organisation, every dollar raised from stall site fees is donated back into the City of Onkaparinga community - supporting clubs, athletes, individuals, schools, and local charities. To date more than $236,000 has been donated to the community. The market operates exclusively under a non-commercial mandate: you'll find second-hand goods and clothing, home-grown fresh produce and plants, homemade jewellery and crafts, antiques, collectables, and bric-a-brac - all sold by locals, for locals. A rostered community BBQ run by local surf lifesaving clubs and Coast Guard adds a classic seaside Australian market atmosphere.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I book a stall?

Contact Liz Stanley (Secretary) by phone on 0405 025 968 or via the website contact form. Bookings close at 5 pm on the Saturday immediately before each market. First-time stallholders must complete the booking form and produce a driver's licence when registering.

Can I sell new goods at the market?

Generally no. The market operates under strict Council Development Approval for non-commercial goods only: second-hand items from your home, homemade goods, home-grown produce, or items you have value-added yourself. One-off new goods are allowed, but bulk new items, commercial products, and multi-level marketing goods are not permitted.

What happens if the market is cancelled due to rain?

If the weather is bad, the decision to postpone or cancel is made at 8 am on the day. A postponed market will be held the following Sunday, and unused pre-booked tickets remain valid for the rescheduled date. Check the Facebook page for up-to-date announcements.

Can I bring my dog?

Dogs are not permitted at the market. The committee asks that stallholders do not bring their dogs, and this also applies to visitors.

Where do stallholders queue and enter?

Stallholders queue around the block from Kerry St (off Dyson Road), onto McKay Ave, then Price St and Beach Rd. Pre-booked tickets must be collected from the Ticket Officer on The Reserve between 7:00 and 7:45 am. Stallholders enter the reserve at 8 am and tickets must be presented at the gate. All stall sites must be vacated by 1:30 pm.

How can I apply for a community donation?

Anyone living within the City of Onkaparinga can apply. Contact the committee via email or letter; applications are assessed at monthly committee meetings. Only one donation per applicant is granted per calendar year, though re-application is welcome after 12 months.
