    About this market

The Olive Tree Market is Newcastle's leading contemporary art and design market, held monthly at Civic Park in the heart of the city. Founded in 2008, it has grown into one of the most-loved events on Newcastle's cultural calendar - a festival-atmosphere gathering where over 130 carefully curated stallholders set up each month across art, design, handmade goods, gourmet food, and street food. The market was built on a clear ethos: support the maker community, champion ethically produced Australian-made goods, and create a genuine meeting place where visitors connect with the artists and designers behind the work. Over 18 years and more than 115 market days, Olive Tree has fostered more than 800 artists, designers and creative small businesses, with the creator required to attend and sell their own work in person - no agents or wholesalers. Beyond the stalls, a Main Music Stage showcases live independent music, and the market regularly hosts immersive workshops and community happenings. Light rail drops visitors at the Civic stop, making it easy to arrive car-free.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get there by public transport?

Jump on the Newcastle Light Rail and alight at the Civic stop. Walk through Wheeler Place and you'll arrive directly at Olive Tree in Civic Park.

    Is there parking nearby?

The closest car park is First Parking on Argyle Street, Civic. Street parking is also available in surrounding streets, but the organisers encourage walking, cycling or public transport to keep the city green.

    Do stallholders accept card payments?

Most stallholders accept EFTPOS and credit card, but some emerging creatives operate cash only. It's worth bringing some cash as a backup. The nearest ATM is a 2-minute walk at 365 Hunter St.

    Can I bring my dog?

Yes - well-socialised dogs that love people and other dogs are very welcome. Keep them on lead and be mindful of the crowd.

    Are there toilets on site?

Yes. There is a permanent amenities block in the centre of Civic Park, plus two portable toilets beside the female amenities.

How do I apply to be a stallholder?

Applications for 2026 market dates are open via the Apply page on the website. The market is highly curated - products must be Australian made, ethically produced, and designed and made by the attending stallholder. Stall fees are $145 for a standard 3m x 3m art/design or gourmet food stall, with powered and food truck options also available.

When does the market run in November and December?

During November and December, Olive Tree adds a second date (the 3rd Saturday of the month) for its Christmas Markets, in addition to the regular 1st Saturday.
