Held on the lawns outside Foster's War Memorial Arts Centre - or inside the hall when the weather turns - Prom Country Farmers Market is a genuine producer-only market drawing on the rich agricultural land of South Gippsland and the seasonal bounty of Corner Inlet's waters. Every stallholder must grow, make or catch their own products, so what you find here is the real thing: freshly caught gummy shark, king george whiting and flathead from Corner Inlet fisherman Wayne Cripps; award-winning extra virgin olive oils from Golden Creek Olives at Fish Creek; pasture-raised pork small goods from Amber Creek Farm; and organic wood-fired sourdough stone-ground fresh each week at Oak and Swan's farm bakery in Mardan.
The market has a warm community character - signs throughout Foster point the way, the Foster Primary School Kitchen Garden stall serves hot breakfast and fundraises for its Stephanie Alexander program, and a community stall lets locals sell or donate excess produce. Single-use plastic bags have been banned since the market's first day, so bring your cloth bags and enjoy a genuinely friendly, authentic experience at the edge of Wilsons Promontory country.
