About this market

Founded in 1978, the Violet Town Community Market is widely regarded as one of Victoria's premier country markets - a warm, unhurried gathering that draws shoppers from across the Strathbogie Shire and beyond to the Recreation Reserve on Tulip Street. With over 250 stallholders on the books, the mix spans fresh produce, home-baked goods, arts and crafts, jewellery, plants, tools, furniture, and wine and beer tastings - all set to a backdrop of live music and the smell of good coffee. Run entirely by volunteers through the Violet Town Action Group, the market has a genuine community heartbeat: proceeds support local groups, and a gold coin donation to the organisation of the month is warmly welcomed at the gate.

Sustainability is woven into the market's DNA - the team operates a four-bin sorting system (including a 10-cent container deposit bin), and visitors are encouraged to bring their own reusable bags, mugs and water bottles. The site is smoke-free and service-dog only. Note that there is no ATM at the market itself, though two are available in town, and some stalls are cash only. On exceptionally hot days the market may close at 12:30 pm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an ATM at the market?

No - the market no longer has an ATM on site. Bring cash as some stalls do not have eftpos. Two ATMs are available in town: one at the Hotel and one at the Petrol Station.

Can I bring my dog?

No dogs are permitted on the market site. Service dogs are the only exception. The market is also a smoke-free zone.

How do I apply for a stall?

New stallholders must submit an online application via the Stall Application page on the Violet Town website. Applications are reviewed and responded to within two weeks. Contact the Market Coordinator (Mel Antony) at market@violettown.org.au or 0416 233 584 for assistance.

What are the stall fees?

From 1 July 2025: Homemade/Homegrown stalls are $48 per site (discount for local 3669 postcode residents). Commercial stalls are $58 per site (discount for locals). Power (if available) is $6 per lead. All stallholders must hold their own public liability insurance.
