About this market

Set along the sun-soaked Esplanade at Elephant Walk, the Torquay Cowrie Market is one of the Great Ocean Road region's best-loved monthly gatherings, drawing locals and visitors alike with its relaxed, coastal atmosphere. Running for over 27 years and operated by Surf Coast Arts Inc, it has grown into one of the biggest art and craft markets in the area - a genuine community institution with a strong creative heart.

Every item at the Cowrie Market must be environmentally friendly, handmade, homegrown, or personally designed by the stallholder, ensuring a quality and authenticity you can feel as you browse. Stalls span quality local art, jewellery, fashion, vintage goods, plants, gifts, homegrown produce, and an extensive range of food. Live local music and entertainment feature on stage, and pop-up activities and performances add to the lively foreshore vibe. The market is committed to being single-use plastic free - shoppers are encouraged to bring reusable cups, bottles and bags to help protect the beautiful Torquay beach and coastline.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the Torquay Cowrie Market run?

The market runs on the third Sunday of each month from September through to April. It does not operate during the winter months (May to August).

Can I apply to be a stallholder?

Applications for each new season open in August. New stallholders must live in the G21 region (Surf Coast, Greater Geelong, Queenscliff, Golden Plains, or Colac Otway Shire). Priority is given to artists on the Surf Coast who create unique offerings not already represented at the market.

What does a stall cost?

General stalls are $50 for a single site or $100 for a double (plus a $2 platform fee). Food stalls (excluding pre-made baking and condiments) are $65 single or $130 double. Adding a car to your site costs $15, and power is available for $35. Local community groups attend free of charge.

Is the market plastic free?

Yes - the Torquay Cowrie Market aims to be a single-use plastic free event. Please bring your own reusable cups, bottles and bags.

How do I check if the market is on?

Follow the market on Facebook or Instagram for weather updates and confirmation of whether each market is proceeding.
